Thirty-five people have been killed after a drone attack that struck a traditional court session in Sudan’s Darfur region, according to a local rights group. Sudan court drone attack, It is another instance of bloodshed amid Sudan’s ongoing three-year-long civil war.
The Emergency Lawyers Group, which records violence committed against civilians in Sudan, reported that the drone attack occurred on Sunday in Ghara al-Zawiya village, an area under the control of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Commenting on the allegations, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) made no statements.
The situation is unfolding against the backdrop of continued clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF that have destroyed the country, with millions of people being displaced and thousands killed since the civil war began in April 2023.
Drones Attack Civilian Meeting
According to Emergency Lawyers Group, the attack was carried out on a traditional meeting under a tree where some leaders in the community gathered to solve any disputes.
It is reported that at least 35 civilians died due to the attack, and dozens more were injured.
Also, among the victims of the attack are said to be four local leaders and two commanders of Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Darfur 24 says that, according to locals, there were at least two drones that flew over the village and attacked the traditional meeting with missiles.
Rights Group Wants Investigation of the Attack
As a result of the attack, the Emergency Lawyers Group said it condemns the strike and demands an independent investigation of the attack.
In its statement, the organization stated that this is a gross violation of international humanitarian law.
Moreover, this practice puts the civilian communities in even more danger due to the increasing use of drones in the current war.
According to rights observers, the use of drones became widespread in Sudan with attacks that endangered civilians from both sides.
Darfur Remains an Active Conflict Area
For the period starting from when the civil war erupted, Darfur has been one of the worst affected places. Although the Sudanese army managed to reclaim control over some areas in the center of Sudan, the RSF still controls most of the areas in Darfur.
There have been frequent attacks on towns, villages, and displacement camps, thus making an already bad humanitarian situation worse.
In 2017, when the RSF launched an attack on El-Fasher – the largest town in Darfur – a UN investigative mission found the attacks were “consistent with genocide.” The RSF denied those accusations.

The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese armed forces and the Rapid Support Forces has resulted in one of the biggest humanitarian crises around the world.
Hundreds of thousands of people have had to leave their homes, and there is still very limited access to food, medical treatment, and assistance in several conflict-affected areas.
The international organizations have expressed their concern about the fact that the shelling and attacks against the infrastructure, marketplaces, hospitals, and gatherings of civilians are making the lives of millions of Sudanese even harder.
The humanitarian organizations keep calling on both sides to abide by international law and to prevent any further violence against civilians.
