The Ceuta migrant crisis has escalated into a matter of death, with Spain claiming that at least 72 people have died following thousands of migrants crossing the border between Morocco and Spanish Ceuta. Ceuta border crisis, Meanwhile, the Moroccan government has reported that 11 migrants have died after crossing the Ceuta border, a difference that continues to grow as investigations continue.
These mass migration crises started on Thursday, when about 60,000 migrants crossed the borders into Ceuta using either waterways around the borders or climbing the fence.
Death Toll Discrepancy Sparks Controversy
According to the Spanish officials, there were five more bodies found on Ceuta’s coastline, increasing the number of dead migrants to at least 72. It should be noted that the number of casualties is likely to increase because of further investigation of recovery operations.
As for the Spanish Civil Guard, it has started identification procedures via fingerprinting and DNA testing of those who died.
On the other hand, according to the statements made by the Moroccan Interior Ministry, 11 people died, most of whom due to drowning. At the same time, the ministry stated that it was still checking the news about deaths reported by Spanish officials.
Beforehand, the head of Ceuta’s autonomous region, Juan Jesús Vivas, mentioned that the local morgue received even more dead bodies, including those who attempted to cross before 2 weeks ago.
Over 48,000 Migrants Returned to Morocco
According to Spanish officials, more than 48,000 people returned to Morocco during 48 hours after the migration wave. Thus, the reception centers have become less loaded.
Moreover, over 1,000 people have been treated, while emergency services were helping vulnerable migrants.
Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares has stated that virtually all the migrants who have entered Ceuta illegally have been repatriated to Morocco.
What Caused So Many Migrants to Make the Journey?
Morocco cited human traffickers and misleading information being spread via social media, along with confusion regarding a recent Supreme Court ruling in Spain, as causes for the huge number of migrants making the journey.
Spain has denied any claims that the migration policies implemented recently have led to these huge numbers of migrants attempting to cross into Ceuta, noting that migrants who make the crossing irregularly are not entitled to automatic entry into mainland Spain or anywhere else within the Schengen Area.
Most migrants swam over several kilometers from the Moroccan cities of Fnideq and Belyounech, and others have attempted to climb over the borders and the breakwaters. Several victims died in the process of trying to make the journey, drowning or getting killed climbing.
Steps towards European Border Protection – Ceuta border crisis
The tragedy has triggered a broader European reaction.
As Spanish sources indicate, 22 EU member countries have demanded better coordination in border protection after the tragic events.
Spain has bolstered its military and law enforcement troops in Ceuta and has installed a floating barrier of 500 meters long along the part of the coastline in order to prevent new attempts to cross the border through the water.
The tragedy has also put the issue of migration policy in Europe under discussion again, as Ceuta and nearby Melilla still represent the only land borders of the EU with Africa.
While rescue efforts continue and victims’ identification is underway, humanitarian organizations demand more steps be taken to prevent such tragedies in the future.
