France Africa Summit 2026

France Seeks Fresh African Partnerships at Nairobi Summit Amid Waning Sahel Influence

France is currently gearing up for one of its most important African summits, as President Emmanuel Macron tries to refocus Paris’ influence on the continent amid a string of losses in West Africa and the Sahel region.

The two-day Nairobi Summit 2026 will mark the first time that France will host its flagship annual African meeting in an Anglophone African country.

Until now, France has been able to maintain strong political, military, and economic ties across several African countries owing to the fact that many of them were former French colonies.

Why France Is Departing from the Sahel Region

This is the first summit organized by Kenya since France was met with several challenges to its presence in the Sahel region.

France was expelled from countries such as Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger following military takeovers in these countries; moreover, new regimes were seeking Russian-aligned security forces like Wagner Group and its successor, Africa Corps.

Senegal made the biggest blow when President Bassirou Diomaye Faye declared that establishing permanent French military bases was a threat to Senegal’s sovereignty. Subsequently, France transferred command of all its military installations to the Senegalese army.

The events represented a historical disintegration of the French-African relationship known as “Françafrique.” This was a system that had been put in place by France to maintain its domination among its old colonies using military cooperation and economic relations.

Experts believe that France wants to establish an economic and technological approach in Africa.

Why is Kenya Now a Crucial Partner in Macron’s Africa Policy?

The choice of Kenya as host for the summit appears to be deliberate.

While France has a colonial past in much of West Africa, Kenya presents a chance for Paris to develop ties in a part of the continent where the reach of French power has been more modest.

French diplomats say that the topics to be discussed at the summit include:

  • Artificial intelligence
  • Renewable energy
  • Infrastructural projects
  • Educational collaborations
  • Increasing trade relations
  • Programs promoting youth innovation

President William Ruto of Kenya is scheduled to co-chair the summit along with Macron, with additional attention on changes to international financial systems that impact indebted African nations.

In recent times, France has expanded its involvement in Kenya. In 2025, France signed a military agreement with Kenya on intelligence gathering, sea protection, and peacekeeping missions.

Competition From China and Gulf States Stands Out as a Primary Obstacle

In spite of the new orientation of the country, there is an evident increase in competitive tendencies in influencing African countries.

China is still a leader in large-scale projects of infrastructure development in Africa, while Arab Gulf countries such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE have begun active investments into ports, logistic services, farming, and renewable energy.

France has even faced some problems in the sphere in question in East Africa.

Last year, for instance, Kenya ended its contract worth $1.5 billion on the enlargement of the highway with Vinci SA and gave its order to Chinese companies.

These examples demonstrate the difficulties the French diplomacy will have to face to recover its previous position in the new geopolitics of the continent.

Conclusion

The conference held by Emmanuel Macron in Kenya was not just another international meeting.

This was rather a demonstration of the country’s willingness to change its political course towards Africa, which lost its importance for France in recent decades because of Russian, Chinese, and Arab competition.

With the help of a new approach that implies the development of economic cooperation between the two continents, France can try again to gain influence in Africa.
