The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has launched a nationwide central “opt-out” list under the amended regulations in the Consumer Protection Act, 2026.

What Is South Africa’s Opt-Out List for Consumers?

The newly adopted list enables consumers to block various types of electronic marketing communications, such as:

  • Phone calls containing spam
  • SMSes related to promotions
  • E-mail marketing campaigns
  • Automated marketing campaigns

As per the new regulations, organizations are obliged to cleanse their databases by deleting customers who opted out through the national opt-out list.

Individuals can register on the NCC Opt-Out List.

How to Register with the Opt-Out Database

It’s not difficult to register.

Step 1: Access the NCC Registry Website

Access the NCC registry website and find the consumer pre-emptive block segment.

Step 2: Provide Your Contact Information

You will have to provide contact information that you wish to be exempted from marketing directly, which includes:

  • Your mobile phone number
  • Landline phone number
  • E-mail address

Step 3: Verify Your Credentials

The consumer also has to provide identification credentials, such as the South African ID number.

Step 4: Verification Process

Consumers will also get an automatic verification message via email or SMS after registration.

Implications for Companies

The amended laws impose several responsibilities on direct marketers.

These include:

  • Being registered with the NCC

  • Stops from contacting those consumers who have opted out

Companies failing to observe these rules may suffer consequences under the Consumer Protection Act.
