An estimated number of at least 24 people lost their lives as gunmen raided the Bin-Per community located in Mangu Local Government Area in Plateau State of Nigeria, with women and children being amongst those who were killed in the attacks.
The gunmen attacked the community when the people in the community were asleep and set the homes and their properties afire and wounded some others. It is also reported that the attack has sparked off protests from the community over their insecurity in the violence-ridden region of Nigeria known as the Middle Belt.
Mass Burial for 24 People Killed as Gunmen Attacked Their Community at Night
It was in the night in the Bin-Per village located in Kombun district of Mangu LGA of Plateau State of Nigeria, where the attack took place.
It appears that the villagers were taken by surprise when the gunmen invaded their community at night.
According to the local media, the casualty figure is believed to be around 24 or 25 people, although the figure might change as further investigations are underway to assess the casualty rate.
There were women and children among the victims. Other residents were injured and rushed to hospital.
Residents Fled as Houses Burned
It is alleged that some houses were burnt down by the attackers, forcing residents to flee the place.
The destruction has made the consequences of the attack more serious since not only did the residents suffer the loss of their relatives but also lost their houses.
This violence has once again brought up the issue of whether security forces will be able to defend such communities from further attacks in Plateau State, where there have been recurrent attacks and violent clashes.
Mass Funeral Held for Victims
The mass funeral was conducted to commemorate the victims.
This incident has also prompted mass protests by the local women and community organizations.
The demonstrations indicate increasing dissatisfaction among the inhabitants who claim that repeated assaults have made the communities live in permanent fear.
Plateau Violence Connected to Prolonged Land Conflicts
The latest assault takes place amid already existing tensions between communities all across Nigeria’s Middle Belt.
Plateau State has witnessed numerous cases of violence between farming communities and Fulani nomadic herders. The disputes over land, grazing paths, water supplies, and other natural resources often lead to conflicts.
At the same time, the conflict is also affected by ethnic and religious differences because farming communities are usually Christians while Fulani communities are Muslims.
Nevertheless, it should be noted that the conflict is multi-sided and involves different armed groups, criminal gangs, and other parties. Experts constantly warn about not seeing every case of aggression in the region as a religious confrontation.
Security Challenges Worsen After the Mangu Assault
The latest deaths will certainly increase pressure on Nigerian authorities to provide additional security in the rural areas of Plateau State.
Mangu has experienced violent communal conflicts before, with people being forced to leave the area and stop their agricultural activities.
Communities that are dependent on agriculture may face other consequences in addition to losses of life as a result of continued insecurity. Forced displacement, destruction of property and limitation of movement can have negative impacts on the income and food security of households.
Therefore, the most recent attacks further complicate the security and humanitarian situation in the region.
Community Demands Action by the Government
In the wake of the mass burial, community members and demonstrators demanded government action.
There is a demand that security agencies must not allow armed groups to move into vulnerable communities and identify and prosecute the perpetrators of such attacks.
Such an event also increases the pressure on the federal and state governments to solve the underlying problems of such violence in the area.
