Nigerian Naira Holds Stable at ₦1,345 Against Dollar: Latest Rate, Black Market and Implications for Nigerian People

The Nigerian currency is stable at about ₦1,345 to one dollar in the official foreign exchange market, but the black market rate of Nigerian naira has held steady at roughly ₦1,390 to ₦1,411 per dollar.

The relatively smaller gap between the two rates indicates that the volatility in Nigeria’s foreign exchange market is lower than seen when there was a significant divergence between the two markets. An improvement in foreign exchange market liquidity and foreign investment flows is helping the naira.

Official Rate of Naira at ₦1,345

The official rate in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM) is steady at about ₦1,343 to ₦1,345 per dollar.

The stability has been possible due to an increase in dollar availability and foreign portfolio investments into the country.

For firms whose production processes depend on the importation of products or raw materials, having a stable exchange rate will help them to easily estimate costs and purchase them.

Nevertheless, the official exchange rate does not necessarily reflect the exchange rate available for every individual or firm buying the dollar, especially if the availability of foreign exchange through official channels remains constrained.

Black Market Dollar Rate Is Higher

In the black market, the dollar is being sold at about ₦1,390 to ₦1,411, depending on the area and the availability of foreign exchange.

The gap between the official and the parallel exchange rates is still wide, though less wide than the gap seen in those times when scarcity of foreign exchange created a wide divergence between the two exchange markets.

This could be an indication of a reduction in the level of speculation and confidence in the official market. It also makes it difficult for speculators to gain from the difference between the two exchange rates.

However, black-market rates change fast and hence should be taken as indicative of the rate.

Implications of the Stable Naira on Nigerians

A stable currency helps businesses gain some kind of predictability. For instance, importers can better estimate the price of dollar-denominated products in naira when there is relative stability in exchange rates.

The stable naira may also build business confidence in that the firms would be certain of its ability to maintain this level of stability.

For the average Nigerian family, stable naira does not necessarily translate to lower prices of food and other necessities.

In most cases, prices are relatively high due to the rising cost of doing business, fuel costs, among others.

The implication is that Nigerians might not feel the advantages of such stability in exchange rates through their purchasing power.

Why the Exchange Rate Is Important

The value of the naira relative to the US dollar continues to be among the most critical gauges of economic activity in Nigeria because the country depends highly on imported goods for a variety of its consumer products and industrial requirements.

If Nigeria has a stronger currency, then the economic system may have less volatility and become less prone to experiencing inflation. However, the Central Bank of Nigeria needs strong foreign-exchange reserves and continuous flow of dollars to be able to react to any pressure in the market.

Nevertheless, in order to keep the exchange rate stable, Nigeria should be able to ensure constant dollar liquidity, investor confidence, and improvement in its external and fiscal situation.

Now, the fact that the naira remains around ₦1,345 to the dollar officially, as well as within the relatively narrow range of the parallel market, indicates that the foreign-exchange market in Nigeria is more balanced compared to the period of extreme volatility of the national currency.
