DR Congo Ebola Death Toll Tops 1,000: Ituri Still Epicentre

Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is suffering from one of the deadliest Ebola epidemics in recent times, as the death toll crosses 1,000 in a bid by health authorities to curb the spread of the disease. Treatment wards and isolation facilities are being expanded to accommodate an increasing number of patients. Labs are also being improved to ensure increased testing capacity to allow for rapid detection and treatment of the cases identified.

Contact tracing is one of the crucial methods for combating the disease, whereby thousands of people potentially exposed to confirmed cases are being traced to detect any other infections in their early stage.

Safe and dignified burials are also being promoted due to the high transmissibility of the disease even after death.

Security Obstacles Persist in Containing Ebola

Even with increased international assistance, there continue to be obstacles in responding to the Ebola crisis. The security challenges that exist in some eastern DRC, particularly areas affected by armed conflicts, hinder access to some of the affected areas.

The health personnel conducting investigations of Ebola cases have experienced community resistance in some places due to misinformation. Public cooperation is deemed essential in containing the epidemic.
