Uganda: Education Minister’s announces dates for reopening schools and tertiary institutions

Minister for Education and Sport, Janet Kataaha Museveni has said that if everything goes according to plan, the schools will open again later this month.

On March 18, President Museveni ordered all schools in the country to be closed for 30 days as one of the ways to fight the spread of the deadly coronavirus pandemic.

However, according to the Minister of Education, the schools will be reopened after the 30 days. “Our plan is that if everything goes according to plan and God wants, elementary schools, elementary schools and secondary schools will open again to continue their term of office on April 27 until June 12, 2020,” Museveni said.

She noted that the second semester will then run from June 22 to September 4, 2020, while the third semester will open on September 21 and end on December 19, 2020.

“Holidays should be shortened to allow for more coverage and no extra fees should be charged when semester one resumes. There will be no formal or end of graduation period one while schools will only have a hollow exam which will be done by the end of semester two, “the Education Minister explained.

“Coronavirus spreads through sneezing, coughing or contact with contaminated surfaces. To avoid the disease, wash your hands with soap regularly, do not spit in public, avoid crowds and stay home if you have the flu.

Protect yourself and your loved ones. Let us fight Corona together. This message comes from the Ministry of Health ” Ms. Museveni noted that the ministry will organize lessons beyond what can be reached by all students and that they have already secured free learning time on radio and TV to engage students in classes in an organized manner.

President Museveni’s directives also affected tertiary institutions which were also ordered to close for one month. However, according to the Minister of Education, universities and other colleges will open on May 2, 2020 to continue the holiday if everything goes according to plan
