Seven women’s deaths have been reported in Ekurhuleni, east of Johannesburg, from July onwards, and South African police are investigating the deaths and offering a R400,000 reward to help the investigation. The investigation has become more serious due to another body found on September 15.
The recent developments are raising concerns about a possible serial killer in action; however, police have denied that they have established the connection between all eight killings.
Women’s Bodies Found Dead in Ekurhuleni Region
The dead bodies of these women have been recovered from places like Kempton Park, Olifantsfontein and KwaThema. The most recent victim is a 35-year-old woman, whose body was found in KwaThema, and the victim hasn’t been identified yet by the police department that reported this news.
Initially, the police reported five cases on 14th September; later, after an assessment, more deaths had been added to the list. By 16th September, police were investigating eight cases.
Only two out of the eight women were identified, according to reports from locals, and police are still calling upon people to come forward with information regarding their missing relative.
So Far, What Police Have Found
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has launched a multi-disciplinary operation in which detectives, forensic, intelligence officials, tracking, K9 unit and members of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department are involved.
The police are analyzing the profiles of both victims and suspects, assessing circumstances around each murder case and searching for any connections among them.
“Although there appear to be some similarities in the cases, the authorities are being very careful about linking the cases together prior to forensics and investigations being completed.”
A suspect has been arrested for the first murder case, which occurred in July and continues to be in police custody. Police never officially said whether he had anything to do with the other cases.
Reward of R400,000 Offered for Information
The South African Police Service is offering a reward of R400,000 for any information that would help in the arrest of the people responsible for killing the women.
This is because the authorities are trying to motivate witnesses and other members of the public to come forward with their information.
Police are urging citizens not to make unsubstantiated reports regarding the murders. Proving that these cases are linked will only happen through forensics, testimonies and other aspects of the investigation.
Why the Cases Have Generated National Concern
The deaths have once again raised issues relating to violence against women in South Africa, which has always been an ongoing issue in the country. The discovery of several dead bodies over a short period of time has also led to public fear regarding the potential existence of a serial killer.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has requested a full investigation into the matter, while the police have also vowed to investigate all possible leads.
Nevertheless, the authorities have yet to classify the deaths as those committed by a serial killer. This is significant since it is not clear at the moment whether the murders have any connection to each other.
