Airtime and data loans in Nigeria have gone through huge changes—and chances are that you have felt the difference if you have tried borrowing credit from your phone number lately.
Years ago, Nigerians could dial a short code and instantly get credit on their network accounts FCCPC Airtime Loan Nigeria via MTN Nigeria and Airtel Nigeria, among others. However, things seem to be changing now.
What Has Led MTN & Airtel to Suspend Airtime Borrowing
According to a new rule introduced by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, borrowing money for airtime and data usage should be considered the same way as a regular financial service.
As a result, new borrowing regulations should apply to the airtime and data lending service.
The New Kids on the Block
Filling the void, the FCCPC has licensed five new companies to provide airtime and data credit.
Unlike the usual telecom companies, these will reportedly operate more as fintechs. They will provide credits via their respective apps, digital wallets, and online portals instead of USSD codes.
While the full workings of how these would run are yet to be detailed, the plan is to establish a more organized lending system.
How Airtime Loans Would Be Obtained Going Forward
The new process should be much more formalized than the current one.
Instead of punching codes into your phone, you should:
- Register for a loan via an app or website
- Be vetted based on your calling activity and top-ups
- Get lower credit amounts that increment as your account gains credibility
Repayment may also take different forms. Rather than automatically being deducted from your future top-up amount only, repayment can be done in other ways, like:
- Payment within the app
- Deduction from your wallet
- Scheduled repayments depending on the company
Implications for Nigerians
This is one development with merits and demerits.
The following are some of the benefits:
- Clearness in payment and charges
- Enhanced consumer protection by regulation
- Increased competition, not only among telcos
The downsides include:
- Long period of registration
- Chances of delay before access is granted
- It is not readily available like the previous USSD
Will MTN and Airtel Offer Airtime Loans Again?
Of course, but not now.
MTN and Airtel are both set to offer airtime loans to Nigerian customers once their processes are completely compliant with FCCPC regulations.
Conclusion
Nigerian airtime borrowing services have evolved from an instant process to a regulated and structured one.
Even though this may be seen as an inconvenience at first, the move shows a commitment towards more regulation and accountability.
The important question now is whether these new players can keep up with the pace of innovation and meet the needs of Nigerians.
