Starting from May 25, 2026, in commemoration of Africa Day, Ghana will formally implement its “free visa” policy for African nationals.

Those planning to enter Ghana after the 25th of May should do their application online before travelling.

Step 1: Enter the E-Visa Website

The applicant needs to go to the official Ghana e-visa website.

Step 2: Check Your Eligibility

The applicant needs to choose his/her nationality and check whether he/she qualifies under the new Africa visa policy.

Eligible African passport holders will notice that the visa costs nothing, as it will be marked as $0.

Step 3: Registration on the Platform

The applicant needs to register and open an account via his/her email address.

Step 4: Fill Out the Application Form

Now the applicant can provide the necessary information and attach all required documents.

Step 5: Submitting the Application

As the visa costs nothing, the applicant does not need to make any payments.

The authorities claim that the processing time for approved e-visas is about 72 hours.

Documents Required for a Free Visa in Ghana

Despite the visa being entirely free, the applicant will still need to present some travel documents.

Required Travel Documents Include:

  • A passport valid for at least six months
  • A passport-size digital photo
  • Proof of accommodation
  • Return or onward tickets

A yellow fever vaccination certificate

It is also recommended that visitors bring with them printed versions of:

  • the e-visa is issued after approval,
  • the accommodation details,
  • and other travel documents.

Reasons for Adopting the Policy by Ghana

This policy is in line with efforts by the African Union to promote easier travel within the continent through policies related to the Agenda 2063 initiative.

The adoption of the policy will be beneficial for boosting:
