inaki williams confirms nationality switch to play for ghana
Athletic Bilbao striker Inaki Williams has completed his nationality switch to play for Ghana ahead of the 2022 World Cup. Former Spain international has also promised to give his all for the Black Stars of Ghana.
He confirmed his nationality switch in a post on his Twitter page. Later on, the Ghana Football Association also announced the news. The highly-rated attacker reportedly said, “Ghana played a significant part in becoming who I am as a person, as a son, and as a brother.” He also said that he wanted to demonstrate what Ghana and Africa mean to him.
He arrived in Ghana last month. He held several talks with officials of the Ghana Football Association. Later on, he agreed to represent the country of his parents, Ghana.
After announcing the news, Williams reportedly said, “Today a new challenge begins. From now on, I will defend Ghana’s T-shirt with all my will whilst I give my best. I’m one of the Black Stars.” His parents are from Accra, the capital of Ghana.
After his switch, Williams is now eligible to play for Ghana and could be part of the Black Stars squad. The switch is important for Ghana ahead of this year’s World Cup in Qatar. The Black Stars of Ghana are in Group H of the FIFA World Cup, where they have been grouped alongside Portugal, Uruguay, and South Korea. The tournament will start on November 21, 2022.
Williams is also available for Ghana’s 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers doubleheader against Angola in September.
Inaki Williams holds the LaLiga record for consecutive appearances, 233 games, after bettering the previous mark of 202 in October. He has played for the Spain Under-21 side. He also made one appearance for the senior team in a friendly against Bosnia in 2016.
