A deadly armed ambush in Gotu, Isiolo County, has claimed the lives of five people, among whom are three security personnel, reflecting the rising fears over banditry and livestock violence in northern Kenya.

What Happened in Gotu?
According to reports from the police station, the security force was dealing with the issue of livestock when the attackers ambushed them with firearms.
In other reports, the bandits had been on the lookout for the corpse of an old man believed to have been killed in the area the previous day. There are slight variations in how the search and ambush were carried out; however, there is confirmation of the deaths and the start of investigations.
The dead people comprised two ASTU personnel, one reservist from the National Police Service, and two civilians. Their remains were sent to the Isiolo County Teaching and Referral Hospital for postmortems.
What’s the Relationship Between This Attack and Livestock Raiding?
The attack on Gotu comes after a livestock raid that took place in Igembe Central of neighbouring Meru County.
The police reported that over 120 cattle were stolen on the September 15 attack. A cattle herder, Haron Mwira, suffered a gunshot wound to his knee and later succumbed to death due to excessive blood loss during his hospitalization. It has raised fears of cross-county livestock rustling and reprisals.
There have been previous incidents of livestock conflicts between the Gotu area and its environs involving cattle and grazing lands and armed groups, resulting in deaths and livestock losses.
What Are Kenyan Authorities Doing?
According to Jacob Muganda, the commissioner of the Eastern Region, more security officers have been moved to Gotu and the surrounding regions. Besides, patrol activities have been increased, and an armoured car has been made available to help security personnel respond to the attacks.
Jacob Muganda also indicated that more National Police Reservists from Gotu will be hired and supplied with weapons. Additionally, the investigation team has gotten leads from the mobile phones and other electronic devices reportedly left behind at the scene.
The governor of Isiolo, Abdi Guyo, has called for more aggressive security operations, patrolling activities, and intelligence gathering. Similarly, Senator Fatuma Dullo and other regional representatives have asked the national government to increase efforts in tackling the problem.
Protests after Five Deaths
These killings have led to a demonstration in Isiolo town amid protests over worsening insecurity. Isiolo-Marsabit highway has reportedly been blocked by demonstrators before the intervention of the police.
