Seven people have been reported dead after a helicopter crashed near Mount Ololokwe in Kenya. Among the dead were five Americans and the intelligence chief of Ecuador, Michele Sensi-Contugi.
The incident occurred on Wednesday at 09:13 local time. The helicopter was said to be heading to Ewaso Nyiro from the Loisaba wildlife conservancy when it crashed.
Helicopter Crashes Near Mount Ololokwe
The Kenyan Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) has stated that the crash happened while the helicopter was making a sightseeing flight from the Loisaba wildlife conservancy to Ewaso Nyiro, a river flowing in an area full of national reserves.
Photos at the crash site revealed smoke coming out of a woodland area on Mount Ololokwe with Kenya Red Cross staff walking towards the flaming wreckage.
The helicopter belonged to Lady Lori Helicopters and was a Eurocopter EC130 B4 model.
The company expressed its condolences to the deceased individuals and their respective families.
Intelligence Chief of Ecuador One of the Victims
Among the individuals who died was Michele Sensi-Contugi aged 44 along with his wife, Stephany Hollihan.
Sensi-Contugi was serving as director general of the Strategic Intelligence Center of Ecuador since 2024.
The Ecuadorian government has not provided any detailed information regarding the cause of death. Nevertheless, the office of the country’s president sent condolences in the wake of the tragedy.
The former president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, also announced the death of Sensi-Contugi.
This is a big blow to Ecuador’s intelligence agency because authorities are waiting for more details about the incident.
Five Americans Also Lost Their Lives in Tragic Accident
The other five people who lost their lives were American citizens, said the spokesperson for the US State Department.
Among them was José Alberto Suárez, an NBCUniversal journalist. The memo described Suárez as a respected leader, colleague, and mentor.
Also, according to US media outlets, one of the victims of the helicopter crash was Roger Duarte, a Miami restaurateur.
Carlos Antonio Gimenez, a member of the US Congress, offered his condolences to Duarte’s family and paid his respects to the late businessman.
Names of the other four Americans who lost their lives in the accident are still being withheld from the public.
Initially, there were reports that six tourists and one pilot died, but the media later clarified the nationalities of the people onboard the aircraft.
Investigation of the Incident Underway
There will be an inquiry into the reason why the helicopter crashed in that mountainous region.
The operators of the aircraft have offered their condolences to the bereaved families, but have not offered an explanation for what took place during the flight.
The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority will most likely have a hand in unraveling what really took place.
Helicopter Accidents Have Been Recorded In Kenya Before
This recent incident is not the first fatal helicopter accident in the country.
Six people, including a Kenyan parliament member, perished in February 2026 when a helicopter crashed in Nandi County.
There was another notable incident in 2024, where Kenya’s Chief of Defense Forces, General Francis Omondi Ogolla, died after a helicopter carrying 11 people crashed in western Kenya. Two people survived that incident.
At least 10 military personnel perished in June 2021 following a helicopter crash while attempting to land in an area near Nairobi.
This latest accident is expected to raise aviation safety issues, especially with respect to helicopters flying in distant tourist areas in Kenya.
