Southern Africa – The former prime minister of Lesotho has been charged with the murder of his estranged wife. His spouse at present was also charged with the same allegations last year but proceedings are yet to be concluded.
As per the investigation done till now, it has been found out that she was killed by a hitman hired by the two and at the time of the incident, his present wife Masesaiah was living with him. However, the couple has denied their involvement in the matter.
After he was named a suspect in the murder, there were continuous protests and the pressure was building on Thabane, and that eventually led him to step down from his post in May 2020.
On Thursday, the 82-year-old leader straight away denied the allegations. His former wife, Lipolela Thabane was shot dead as soon as she sat in her car near her home in the capital, Maseru. This was a few days before Thomas Thabane was sworn in as the prime minister in June 2017.
The couple was already going through a divorce when she was shot in the car. As per the security officials there were eight assassins in total who were responsible for the act however, they were not directly present at the location.
A few months after the shooting, Thomas and Maesaiah Thabane married each other and that raised many suspicions regarding their motives. The two are also charged with the attempted murder of Thato Sibolla who was with Lipolelo Thabane at the time of death. For a small landlocked kingdom, this is a huge deal and when the reports came about the incident, it left the public in shock and the whole of South Africa was protesting against it. The current status of the case is against the former prime minister and as of his wife, she has been released on bail after being charged for it last year.
