Lhuan-dre Pretorius 188: T20 Record Broken

A 20-year-old from Potchefstroom has just taken one of cricket’s most famous records away from the Caribbean. Lhuan-dre Pretorius 188 breaks Chris Gayle T20 record, and it happened on home soil in Bloemfontein on Friday, in a CSA T20 Challenge game between the Titans and the Knights. Not in the IPL, not under the floodlights in Dubai. Right here in South Africa.

The Innings That Stopped Bloemfontein

Pretorius opened for the Titans and simply never left. He finished unbeaten on 188 from 79 balls, with 15 fours and 13 sixes, at a strike rate of roughly 238. His fifty took 24 balls, the hundred arrived 16 balls later, and he was on 150 off 58 deliveries. Only the end of the innings stopped him, leaving him 12 runs short of the first double century in men’s T20 cricket. The Titans finished on 267 for 3 and won by 124 runs.

Gayle’s Mark Finally Falls

Gayle’s 175 not out for Royal Challengers Bangalore against Pune Warriors in the 2013 IPL had stood for 13 years. Nobody got past it in all that time. Australia’s Aaron Finch, with 172 against Zimbabwe in 2018, now sits third on the list. Pretorius cleared the old mark by 13 runs and also matched Finch and Marcus Stoinis for the most balls faced in a men’s T20 innings.

A Young Man in a Hurry

This didn’t come from nowhere. Born on 27 March 2006, Pretorius scored 153 on his Test debut against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo last year. He has also played for Hampshire in the Vitality Blast and was picked up by the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL. Captain Donovan Ferreira helped out in Bloemfontein too, smashing 29 off 11 balls, but this night belonged to the opener.

Records like this usually get set in Mumbai or Sydney. This one belongs to the continent’s own domestic circuit. The Titans now hold the five highest team totals in CSA T20 Challenge history, and the previous tournament best of 162, scored by Dewald Brevis, came against the same Knights side in 2022. Elsewhere in Africa, Rwanda’s Hamza Khan hit 164 not out against Ivory Coast this year, a score that also sits high on the all-time list. Cricket on the continent is producing bigger numbers than ever.

What Comes Next

The first T20 double century is still out there, and Pretorius has shown how close he can get. This was a domestic match, so the international stage will be the real test. But at 20, he has plenty of time. For now, the world record belongs to a South African, and the whole continent can enjoy that.
