Mali’s prolonged conflict is now heading into a new era where generative artificial intelligence becomes a vital means in the fight for public opinion. As reported by the Timbuktu Institute based in Dakar, AI is now being used by various parties to hasten propaganda efforts, propagate political narratives, and make the online influence campaign difficult to trace.

The Use of AI in Mali’s Conflict
The use of the technology varies among factions, according to the Timbuktu Institute, depending on the party’s resources, aims, and media capabilities.
The Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) – an affiliate of Al-Qaeda – does not seem to have extensively employed generative AI yet. The propaganda wing of JNIM, Az-Zallaqa, has developed AI-generated posters in June 2026 as evidence of how generative AI may be incorporated into a pre-existing propagandistic campaign.
The advantage is speed. Generative AI may decrease the amount of time and expenses spent on developing visual content, translating propaganda, and adapting it to various audiences.
AI-Generated Characters Shape Narrative
There seems to be greater visibility of AI among the online networks that support the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA) – a Tuareg separatist group.
According to the report by the Timbuktu Institute, TikTok accounts with AI-generated personas that were used to spread pro-Azawad narratives have been discovered. In this way, political messages gain some personal touch and become more difficult to trace to their authorship.
At the same time, it is important to note that not all the content that supports the FLA means that it was created under its direction. It is still necessary to establish who is operating and financing such networks.
Russia and Africa Corps Are More Advanced
According to the report, the use of generative AI by Russian-linked information operations is more sophisticated compared to others. The campaigns that have employed African Initiative and “AI-Freak” operations use AI-generated material in combination with the use of fake accounts and distribution.
The military government of Mali has aligned itself with Russia following the country’s break with Western allies, while members of the Russian Africa Corps have helped in battling the insurgents.
