Morocco Reveals its Green Hydrogen Offering

Morocco has unveiled its ambitious plan, known as the “Morocco Offer,” aimed at fostering the development of the green hydrogen sector within its territory. Recognized as a promising future exporter of green hydrogen, the country is now taking concrete steps to realize this potential by releasing initial details of its hydrogen strategy.

According to a circular issued by the office of Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch, Morocco intends to allocate up to one million hectares (equivalent to 10,000 square kilometers) of land for green hydrogen projects as part of the “Morocco Offer.” In the initial phase, a portion of 300,000 hectares will be made available, with allocation sizes ranging from 10,000 to 30,000 hectares, depending on the scale of the proposed projects.

The scope of the “Morocco Offer” encompasses integrated projects that encompass the entire value chain of green hydrogen production. This includes generating electricity from renewable energy sources, utilizing electrolysis for hydrogen production, and facilitating the transformation of green hydrogen into products such as ammonia, methanol, synthetic fuels, and more. The offer also extends to the logistics and infrastructure required to support these projects.

The press release accompanying the announcement highlights the strong interest already expressed by approximately a hundred national and foreign investors who are eager to participate in Morocco’s green hydrogen initiatives. This early enthusiasm demonstrates the attractiveness of the “Morocco Offer” and the potential it holds for fostering collaboration and investment in the country’s green hydrogen sector.

In terms of hydrogen demand, Morocco aims to meet a domestic requirement of 4 TWh (terawatt-hours) per year by 2030. Simultaneously, the country has set its sights on becoming a significant hydrogen exporter, targeting an export volume of 10 TWh (approximately 300,000 tonnes per year). This dual focus on meeting domestic needs while seizing opportunities in the global market positions Morocco as a key player in the green hydrogen landscape.

With its “Morocco Offer,” the kingdom is actively inviting national and international investors to contribute to the development of green hydrogen capacities within its borders. This strategic move underscores Morocco’s commitment to renewable energy, sustainability, and the transition to cleaner and more environmentally friendly sources of energy.
