Near the mosque in Abuja, worshippers offered virus vaccinations.

Nigeria – In Nigeria’s 206 million population, seven million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine have been administered. A religious leader, Alhaji Lubisalah, praised the government’s efforts to combat the virus, but said the authorities should focus more on the continent’s battle against malaria, which he claims kills more people than COVID-19.

After Friday prayers at Kuje Mosque in Abuja, the deputy Imam was given a Moderna vaccine in an effort to encourage people to get the vaccine. “Yes, they (the government) are doing a good job in this area (vaccinating people against COVID-19), but we have more serious illnesses, and I’m not sure why the government is focusing on this.

After clinical trials in three African countries—Ghana, Kenya, and Malawi—where more than 800,000 children have received the vaccine since 2019, the WHO endorsed the world’s first malaria vaccine on Wednesday. According to the WHO World Malaria Report 2020, Africa accounted for 94 percent of the world’s malaria cases in 2019, with an estimated 215 million cases.
