Nigeria’s New ‘Airtime Credit’ Rule for Bad Network Service Starts Today: Are You Owed Free Credits?

A fresh regulation issued in Nigeria will ensure that telecoms customers in the country who complain about poor network coverage receive airtime credits at no cost.

In its latest directive, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) says telecom operators should compensate subscribers when there are complaints about poor services.

Speaking to members of the press, Dr. Aminu Garba Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, said telecom operators must take full responsibility for their lapses.

Reasons for Adopting the Airtime Credit Policy

It comes after documented violations of the minimum required standards in terms of quality of service by the telecom operators in certain regions within the country.

With its modern network surveillance mechanisms, the NCC has been able to identify the local government areas where the problem occurred in the quality of connectivity services provided.

This is a departure from the previous mode of dealing with such situations based on reports by the consumers.

Which Consumers Qualify for the Airtime Credits

Consumers eligible for the compensation include all subscribers whose mobile telephony was characterized by poor quality between:

November 2025 – January 2026

In these affected regions, the customers will receive airtime credit from the telecom operators.

Subscribers will be informed about:

  • The reasons for such a compensation scheme
  • The amount of airtime credited to their accounts

Enforcement of Compliance

To ensure compliance with this regulation, the NCC has put in place the following measures;

  • Issuance of airtime credit shall be the responsibility of the telecom operators.
  • The NCC will undertake verification exercises.
  • Non-compliance shall be subject to penalties.
