No confirmation on gender equality agreement for Libya

After much delay, Libya has decided to suspend the gender equality agreement from implementation in the country.

Earlier this week, the Libyan Transitional Council of Ministers which was lead by Abdelhamid Dbeibah announced that the implementation of a gender equality bill on the occasion of  International Women’s Rights Day was canceled

The official announcement was made on the evening of women’s day after the conclusion of a government meeting. The declaration by officials said that they have taken the decision in the wake of complications with the provisions of Islamic sharia (law).

Post the confirmations, the Minister of State for Women’s Affairs Houriya Tourmal stressed that when the same was being discussed in October last year, most of the leaders were in agreement of the changes in the national law. She has been receiving a lot of backlash for coming up with such changes in the law by the public.

A section seems satisfied with the call while clothes feel that it will take them 15 years back as there has been no growth with regards to gender equality. While the conservative sections fear that if the changes are introduced, it may contradict the Libyan legislation as well some age-old religious values. The declaration was assumed to be a turning point for the Libyan government considering that the African nation witnessed the formation of a new government last Thursday where Fathi Bachagha was sworn to power.
