FIFA World Cup 2026 dreams ended in heartbreak for Senegal as Belgium delivered one of the best comebacks in the history of the competition to beat them 3-2 via extra time. Senegal were on track for a place in the Round of 16 before Belgium pulled off an incredible late comeback. This thrilling Round of 32 clash had everything including drama, late goals, VAR drama and another Senegal heartbreaking exit for one of the continent’s strongest sides.
Senegal Were Dominating and In Control
Senegal were clearly the better team on the night. The team was dominating the ball, creating chances and leading comfortably in a game that promised to see them into the next round.
Senegal took the lead through Habib Diarra before Ismaila Sarr made the scoreline even more embarrassing for Belgium by extending their advantage.
As pointed out by the former captain of the Republic of Ireland team, Roy Keane, Senegal had found a way to lose the game despite dominating it for almost 80 minutes.
Belgium Comes Back with One of the Most Impressive World Cup Turnarounds Ever
The resurgence for Belgium kicked off with an 86th-minute goal from seasoned forward Romelu Lukaku after he put the ball past Mory Diaw’s attempt to head away Thomas Meunier’s cross.
Three minutes later, Youri Tielemans would score from Leandro Trossard’s cross, and with Senegal’s goalkeeper failing to handle the ball, the game was sent into extra time.
This comeback went down in the record books after Belgium became the first-ever team to escape defeat following being two goals down in the 80+ minutes of regulation play in a FIFA World Cup.
Rudi Garcia congratulated his team on their resilience post-match and acknowledged the contribution of the substitutes.
The comeback was reminiscent of Belgium’s 3-2 comeback against Japan in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
VAR Penalty Becomes New Source of Controversy
Everything came down to a late point in the added minutes when the referee made a call using VAR that awarded a penalty to the Belgian players following a challenge from Lamine Camara on Tielemans.
In the 125th minute, Tielemans scored the penalty following a long VAR review to put away the latest goal to date in FIFA World Cup history.
But the decision sparked controversy as former England defender Gary Neville asked if the challenge warranted a penalty while Roy Keane condemned the long VAR review as well as the hesitation of the referee in making the call.
The penalty is reminiscent of another late one that determined the winner of the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations final.
Another Disappointing Finish for Senegal
Pape Thiaw, coach of the team, admitted it would not be easy accepting the loss but commended his players for their effort in the competition.
This is just another disappointing moment for Senegal who suffered another blow during the Africa Cup of Nations in 2026.
Even after the elimination, Lions of Teranga proved their worth again as one of the finest teams in Africa by delivering some performances that could equal and at times exceed those of one of Europe’s greatest sides.
Belgium’s Veteran Players Do Not Fail
The veteran players of Belgium did not let the nation down.
Romelu Lukaku was a game-changer after coming from the bench, whereas Thomas Meunier delivered the vital assist that helped Belgium win the match. Thibaut Courtois played solidly in goal, while Kevin De Bruyne was substituted in the second half. Despite that, Belgium reached the Round of 16 thanks to its veterans who led the team through an exciting victory.
Belgium goes into the Round of 16 full of confidence, and Senegal leaves the tournament disappointed after another unsuccessful World Cup campaign.
