She also won the Best Supporting Actress award in a Telenovela Award at the 16th annual South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs).

Shaleen Surtie-Richards was born on 7 May 1955 in Upington, South Africa. She completed her schooling at Upington. Shaleen’s mother was a teacher and her father was a principal. Shaleen Surtie-Richards also obtained her teaching qualification from South Africa. She worked as a kindergarten teacher between 1974 and 1984. During that time, she also participated in the Department of Education’s Theatre-in-Education productions.

She began her professional acting career in 1984. Subsequently, she did soap operas like 7de Laan, Villa Rosa, and Generations. She became a household name after doing these soap operas. She also hosted her own talk show, Shaleen, in South Africa. Shaleen was also a judge of Supersterre from 2006–2010. Reportedly, she often struggled to find work in 2021.
She died on 7 June 2021 in Cape Town, South Africa. She had been suffering from multiple health issues. Her family confirmed her death in 2021.
