South Africans are plugging in faster than anyone predicted. South Africa EV sales and the wider new-energy vehicle market have already beaten last year’s full-year total, industry body naamsa said on Monday.
The Numbers Behind the Surge
Sales of new-energy vehicles (NEVs) reached 22,389 between January and September, up 34 percent on the 16,703 sold in all of 2025. In September, one in every nine vehicles sold in the country was an NEV. Overall vehicle sales also grew 10.4 percent year on year in October, to 61,890 units.
There is one aspect that needs attention: “NEV” includes both traditional hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and all-electric vehicles. Traditional hybrids are still in the lead with 11,090 units sold, followed by plug-in hybrids at 8,082 and battery electric vehicles at 3,217. Despite that, plug-in hybrids and BEVs combined have already overtaken traditional hybrids in terms of market share (50.5%).
Fuel Prices Are Doing the Selling
Analysts say high international oil prices are pushing buyers toward electric options. Hiten Parmar of the Electric Mission said rising fuel costs are making more consumers and businesses see the long-term savings of switching. One industry report puts the energy cost of an electric car at about R0.34 per kilometre, against R1.50 for a petrol or diesel equivalent. Add to that the fact that South Africa has gone more than a year without load shedding, and one of the oldest objections to EVs has weakened.
A Small Base, a Big Shift
Perspective helps here. There have only been 1,088 battery electric cars sold in total for the whole year 2025, making 3,217 this year almost three times as much, but it is still just a tiny fraction of a market that sees tens of thousands of cars sold each month. This is aided by new models being introduced by Chinese manufacturers like BYD, Chery, and Great Wall.
Challenges remain, including purchase prices and patchy charging access outside the big cities. But the direction is clear. If fuel prices stay high and models keep arriving, the question for South African drivers may soon shift from “why go electric?” to “why haven’t I yet?”
