Temilade Openiyi nominated for Oscar 2023 award

Temilade Openiyi, a famous Nigerian singer, has been nominated for the 2023 edition of the Oscars in the category of Best Original Song for co-writing ‘Lift Me Up’, a song from the film ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.’

Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, co-wrote the song with Rihanna, Ludwig Göransson, and Ryan Coogler, the director of Marvel’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”

The song was recorded in five countries. It served as the lead single for the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack. 

While discussing the song in the past, Temilade Openiyi said, “After speaking with Ryan and hearing his direction for the film and the song, I wanted to write something that portrays a warm embrace from all the people that I’ve lost in my life.” The Nigerian singer also said that Rihanna was her inspiration for the song.

This year, no African films are represented in the Best International Film category. “All Quiet on the Western Front” from Germany, “Argentina, 1985” from Argentina, “Close” from Belgium, “EO” from Poland and “The Quiet Girl” from Ireland have been nominated under the Best International Feature Film category.
