WhatsApp Dropping Support for Old Phones: What Users Need to Know for 2025

Thousand of users worldwide face a discontinuation of WhatsApp services on older Android versions as Meta has officially announced this platform update. Starting in April 2025 WhatsApp intends to discontinue service for Android phones using operating systems below version 5.0 because it requires system updates for better functionality and enhanced security in addition to new feature deployment.

Why is WhatsApp Dropping Support for Old Phones

The introduction of advanced features by WhatsApp requires operating systems to meet its technical demands which cannot be handled by older platforms. New Android versions after Android 5.0 must run on smartphones because these operating systems do not meet performance requirements along with security needs.

The representative from Meta explained that maintaining outdated platforms presents increasing challenges to platform development. “WhatsApp dropping support for old phones is an unfortunate but necessary step in our development roadmap.”

Users with the following devices will be affected:

  • Samsung Galaxy S3 and S4 Mini
