Zuma is regarded by some South Africans as a liberator and advocate of the underprivileged, but by others as dishonest and unfit for office. Still, it is impossible to overestimate his impact, especially in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), his own province, where he has considerable popularity. Zuma has backed the upstart uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party, which is aiming to take on the African National Congress (ANC), in advance of the elections.
