Disaster teams in KwaZulu-Natal stand ready to respond to persistent rainfall while drivers should approach roads with care. According to SAWS the Easter weekend will experience heavy rainstorms which pose a threat to multiple locations in South Africa.
Regions expected to be impacted include:
- eThekwini
- iLembe
- uMgungundlovu
- Ugu
- Harry Gwala
The government has expanded its rain warning to include uThukela, Amajuba, uMzinyathi, King Cetshwayo, and their surrounding areas.
The Provincial Minister of Cogta Thulasizwe Buthelezi describes that current rainfall presents significant dangers to our communities:
- Further flooding of roads and settlements
- Increased chances of bridge damage
- Displacement of residents
- Life-threatening fast-flowing water
- Disruption to traffic, electricity, and water services
He stressed that people should stay alert to the risks and observe recommended security measures. The municipality recommends everyone stay watchful while following protective measures in the flooded areas.
Motorists need to stay away from journeys if at all possible. During floods you should move out of your trapped vehicle and climb to safer places. People need to stay away from flowing water under all circumstances when flows reach above the ankle line.
Buthelezi also advised:
- Move valuables above anticipated flood levels
- In rural areas, relocate animals to higher ground
- Avoid travel unless necessary, due to potholes and water-covered roads
