A fire that led to the loss of at least 22 lives occurred during a wedding celebration in Panacée Events Hall in Kinshasa, making the night of joy turn into one of the deadliest fires for Kinshasa city in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The fire erupted during the night from Friday to Saturday in the Lingwala area of Kinshasa, where several others sustained injuries and were admitted to various hospitals in Kinshasa. Authorities stated that the death toll was temporary and could increase.
What Occurred at the Wedding?
This happened during the wedding ceremony at Panacée Hall, located within business premises in the Lingwala area.
Nevertheless, as the fire spread, people attempted to escape from the scene of the fire. However, it was not an easy task because of the lack of easy escape routes due to the congested design of the interior of the building. Therefore, it seems that the only exit point was a relatively small door.
Panic and smog added to the problems faced by people attempting to escape from the building. The victims were removed from the location and taken to various medical institutions such as Vijana Hospital, Cinquantenaire Hospital, and Camp Kokolo hospitals.
It became evident how large the catastrophe was when the bodies began to be removed from the building while other workers extinguished the flames and rescued those alive.
What Caused the Fire?
The reasons for the fire in the Kinshasa wedding remain unclear.
It has even been speculated that the cause might be related to some kind of electrical fault or decorations at the wedding ceremony. But up to now, there has not been any concrete evidence, and the investigators have begun their investigation to determine the causes of the fire and whether all safety precautions have been considered regarding fire.
The officials need to investigate the exits in the hall and the building according to the regulations.
Why It Was So Hard To Escape the Fire
It seems like one of the main reasons why so many people perished is the lack of adequate space for exit points.
According to the mayor of Lingwala, the place had only one small exit point through which a lot of people could not escape. Smoke and panic also contributed to the problem.
The incident has brought back fears regarding fire safety in Kinshasa, a very crowded city known for deadly fires occurring on a regular basis. As the Associated Press reports, a lack of firefighting facilities and planning issues can make such cases especially dangerous.
Next Steps
The DRC government is investigating the cause of the fire and the safety conditions in the Panacée hall.
Mayor of Lingwala, Norbert Mushinga, revealed the number of deaths. Meanwhile, Jacquemin Shabani, deputy prime minister and interior minister, visited the accident site and called it a tragedy.
The status of the injured and the number of deaths to be suffered would be among the critical factors that should continue to be noted as treatment of the survivors goes on.
Conclusion
In the case of the wedding disaster in Kinshasa, a personal event has been elevated to a tragedy, leading to the deaths of at least 22 individuals and the injury of other people.
While problems with evacuating people have become a significant issue associated with the disaster, the cause of the fire has yet to be confirmed by the authorities.
