Nigeria CAF Awards 2026

Tinubu Officially Approves Nigeria’s Bid to Host 2026 CAF Awards—Will Lagos or Abuja Get the Main Ceremony?

Nigeria has officially thrown its hat into the ring to host some of the biggest football events on the African continent after President Bola Tinubu gave his nod of approval for the country’s bid to host the Nigeria CAF Awards 2026 and the CAF 48th Ordinary General Assembly.

According to reports from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the news comes after Tinubu met with Patrice Motsepe at an Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, Kenya.

What is the CAF General Assembly?

The CAF Ordinary General Assembly is one of the most significant events in African football administration.

It brings together:

  • CAF’s 54-member association presidents
  • Zonal football unions
  • Key football executives
  • CAF officials and stakeholders

The 48th assembly will take place in October 2026.

Will CAF Awards Return to Nigeria?

The CAF Awards continues to be among Africa’s major annual football events that honor its best players, managers, teams, and football administrators.

The awards ceremony always invites global football celebrities, media representatives, and famous African football figures.

Before the 2000s, Nigeria had held the CAF Awards several times in Lagos, which became the capital city where all entertainment and business activities took place at CAF.

Is It Going To Be Lagos Or Abuja?

CAF and the Nigerian government have not officially disclosed the location of the ceremony; however, the first signals show that this choice can fall on either of two cities – Lagos and Abuja.

Why Is Lagos a Favored Choice?

These factors make Lagos favored for this purpose:

  • Well-developed tourism facilities
  • International air connectivity
  • Presence of a large entertainment industry
  • Experience in holding previous CAF events

Lagos has been hosting important football and entertainment events recently.

Why Is Abuja an Appealing Alternative?

Abuja can become the choice as well due to the following reasons:

  • Being Nigeria’s capital city
  • Possessing better security arrangements

Hosting many international summits organized by the government

CAF assembly involves negotiations at the executive level, and this can play into Abuja’s hands.

Why is hosting the CAF Awards and General Assembly Significant for Nigeria?

Hosting the CAF Awards ceremony would reinforce Nigeria’s status as one of Africa’s football powerhouses.

Moreover, hosting this event would enhance:

  • Sports tourism
  • International prestige
  • Football investments
  • Influence in CAF politics

It would also put Nigeria at the center of key African football decisions before any continental competitions.
