Africa Minimum Wages, For July 2026, there are revisions of salaries in Kenya and Zambia, besides Zimbabwe and Nigeria, where wages are becoming a hot topic in the region.
The recent trends show that the continent is always working on reviewing wages to help workers from the rising cost of living.
Phase I Salary Raising Measures Announced in Kenya
The first phase of the salary raising process for the period 2025-2029 has been implemented in Kenya.
According to Cabinet Secretary in Public Service Geoffrey Ruku, government institutions are in the process of shifting payroll systems in order to introduce the new salary structure and housing allowances ahead of the August payroll period.
The changes have been made following the approval of SRC recommendations as a result of the ongoing public sector pay review in the government.
Apart from civil service reforms, the country has also made changes to statutory minimum wages in terms of Wage Orders of different private sector categories and regions.
But amidst national demonstrations against the high cost of living, President William Ruto has ordered the cancellation of proposed salary increments for parliamentarians and cabinet ministers, saying that high-ranking government officials must practice financial discipline.
Zambia Approves Across-the-Board Civil Service Salary Increase
As far as Zambia is concerned, the government came to an agreement with public service unions over the salary increment of civil servants throughout the country.
The agreement calls for a K700 increment in the monthly basic salary for all eligible public sector workers. Also, there has been a K150 to K175 increment in the meal allowance.
The deal is reached following negotiations between government officials and labor representatives and comes after previous salary hikes for unionized workers in some segments of the financial and public services sectors in 2026.
According to officials, the package seeks to assist workers with managing the increasing cost of living and also maintaining stability within the public services workforce.
Zimbabwe Increases Minimum Wages
The country has also passed a new set of minimum wage rates for several groups of employees.
The Cabinet has adopted the minimum wage rate of US$270 monthly for employees working in unclassified operations. In addition, rates for domestic workers have been increased, and they include:
- Yard workers at US$90.
- Housekeepers at US$99.

Wage Talks Continue in Nigeria
Nigeria is still discussing minimum wages and salaries of the public service workers.
Trade Unions are still lobbying for higher wages, stating that due to high inflation, the purchasing power of workers has been severely affected. The talks are still ongoing, but nevertheless, it is one of the key economic and labor issues of the country in 2026.
Other announcements are expected as negotiations between government representatives and labor unions proceed.
Implications of These Changes for Employees
The recent changes in Kenya, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Nigeria are characteristic of a problem encountered by many African states – reconciling worker benefits and their needs with budgetary considerations.
