Cameroon military leadership shake-up

Cameroon President Paul Biya Has Done a Shake-Up Within the Country’s Military Leadership

Cameroon President Paul Biya has carried out a significant military leadership shake-up, making several changes within the country’s armed forces.

The shake-up has been done via presidential decrees, and it comes after the return of the president, who was on a long-term absence. The shake-up has affected the commanders of various military regions in the country, the intelligence sector, logistics, and the special guard of the president.

At 93 years old, Biya is one of the oldest presidents around the world. His long absence from his official functions led to some speculations regarding his health condition.

Change of Four Regional Commanders

One of the main aspects of the shake-up was the change in four of the five joint military regions of Cameroon.

The changes apply to senior officials who have the responsibility of controlling military activities in large sections of the nation. Additionally, five more colonels have been promoted to the rank of brigadier generals through the process of restructuring.

The changes that the Cameroonian government has made have not been in response to one particular security threat but are part of a continuing presence of the armed forces in several challenging security locations.

Therefore, the restructuring of the military command can mean that the aim is to improve coordination and put reliable officers in key positions.

Presidential Guard Leadership is Kept the Same

Although several senior posts have been filled by new people, President Biya kept a familiar face in charge of the presidential guard.

Raymond Jean Charles Beko’o Abondo has been retained in his post as commander of the unit, which he has occupied since 2013.

This is because of the important role of the presidential guard in the Cameroon security framework due to its function of protecting the head of state and presidential premises.

Therefore, his retention marks a part of the continuity in the shuffle of posts despite other major changes in the military command.

Other changes made include those in the intelligence and logistics sectors

Changes have been witnessed even in leadership structures concerning intelligence, logistics, operations, general inspectorate, and transmission offices of the armed forces.

These organizations play key roles in organizing military activities as well as maintaining the organization of the armed forces.

Such changes may help the government to effectively restructure the responsibilities of command amidst the growing complexities of security challenges in various parts of Cameroon.

Various Security Challenges Faced Across Cameroon

Cameroonian Military Forces are currently facing several security challenges at once.

Firstly, there is the security challenge emanating from the Boko Haram movement as well as the associated armed group in the northern region of the country, while the Anglophone crisis affects the Northwest and Southwest regions of the country.

The government has failed to solve the crisis of secession, which has led to death, displacement, and disruptions within the communities affected.

Dealing with such a situation requires military forces to engage in military operations that span over wide geographical distances with varying types of armed groups.

A Political Dimension to Biya’s Absence

The timing of the changes has not been overlooked, considering they came after a nearly two-month-long absence of Biya, who was in private residence in Europe.

The absence generated speculation regarding his health condition and raised concerns about whether decisions were made from afar.

The new military restructuring demonstrates in a tangible way that presidential influence continues to work.

For President Biya’s regime, it is crucial to control the security structure, considering the political climate in the country and Biya’s age.
