Africa is facing one of its gravest health emergencies in years. The Ebola outbreak in DR Congo has now killed more than 5,300 people, according to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.
The Numbers Behind the Crisis
Africa CDC data released on Monday put the toll at 5,376: 5,372 in the DRC and two each in Kenya and Uganda. The Bundibugyo strain has infected around 10,444 people across the DRC, Uganda and Kenya, with a fatality rate above 50 percent. The DRC declared its 17th Ebola outbreak in mid-May, and it has become the largest the country has ever faced.
Spreading Across Borders
The virus has crossed borders several times in recent months. Uganda recorded 20 cases, almost all in people who had travelled from the DRC, before being declared Ebola-free in August. Kenya reported its first-ever Ebola cases in October, with nine infections and two deaths.
Nigeria’s situation offers some relief. Authorities said two suspected cases in the northeast tested negative twice. Abuja did report an imported case in October, its first in over a decade, with no deaths. France recorded a single case in July involving a health worker returning from the DRC.
The human cost goes beyond statistics. Health workers have been among the victims, and in Bunia, medical teams in protective gear buried Dr Marie-France Shogogo on 31 October after she died at an Ebola treatment centre.
No Cure Yet, but Hope Is Being Tested
There is no approved treatment or vaccine for the rare Bundibugyo strain, which is what makes this outbreak so hard to contain. Clinical trials have begun with Ervebo, a vaccine proven against the more common Zaire strain, to see whether it offers any protection here.
For travellers and communities, the basics still matter: report fevers early, avoid contact with the bodies of people who died from unknown illness, and follow official guidance, including quarantine rules such as Uganda’s 21-day requirement for citizens returning from the DRC. Ebola does not respect borders, and neither can the response.
