Over the weekend, another female runner was killed in the high-altitude Kenyan training town of Iten. Kenyan police confirmed the news on Tuesday, adding that the athlete’s boyfriend is being sought in connection with the murder.
According to Keiyo County police Chief Tom Maruko, the boyfriend, Ethiopian runner Koki Fai, is believed to have fled the country. She was Damaris Muthee Mutua, a Kenyan-born distance runner who competed for Bahrain. She was found dead in the bedroom of her boyfriend.

Mutua’s death mirrors that of Olympic runner and two-time world bronze medalist Agnes Tirop, who was stabbed to death at her Iten home in October. Tirop’s spouse was arrested and charged with murder, and her death led many in Kenya’s running community to come out and stage rallies against what they claim is a widespread problem of domestic violence against female athletes.
