Apple Siri settlement

Apple’s $250 Million Siri Fine: Can African iPhone Users Claim a Piece of the Settlement?

As part of a lawsuit settlement against accusations of misleading customers regarding upgrades on its artificial intelligence, Apple has settled the lawsuit by agreeing to compensate up to $250 million.

Apple Siri settlement, In the case in question, Apple is accused of misleading consumers through its heavily marketed launch of Apple Intelligence with respect to the latest iPhone 15 and 16 generations.

Despite denial of any wrongdoing by Apple, some American consumers may be eligible to receive up to $95 in compensation payments, with others receiving only $25.

Settlement Eligibility Criteria

According to the proposal filed in the California federal court, the payments may go to certain US purchasers who:

  • Have bought an iPhone 15 or 16
  • Purchased during the period of June 2024 and March 2025
  • Are US consumer class members

Currently, it seems that there is no mention of non-US consumers in the settlement proposal.

Reasons Why Apple Was Sued

Apple Inc. was sued for overstating the capabilities of its upgraded AI-based Siri and other aspects of Apple Intelligence.

In their lawsuits, lawyers claimed that the company falsely advertised features that:

  • Are not yet available at release
  • Are still in progress
  • Will not be completed within several years

According to the plaintiffs’ documents, Apple had positioned Siri as an emerging “full-fledged personal AI assistant” even though many key features had not been implemented in time for device releases.

The Wider AI Competition Underlying the Lawsuit

This lawsuit also indicates increased pressure on Apple in the global AI race.

Apple’s competitors have rapidly developed advanced AI software, putting more pressure on Apple to showcase its own technological advancements.

It has been criticized that Apple CEO Tim Cook would increasingly need to demonstrate that Apple could keep up in the upcoming AI technology revolution.

Why Are African Consumers Asking Questions?

Apple devices continue to enjoy a significant market presence in Africa, especially among:

  • Young professionals
  • Artists
  • Business people
  • Premium smartphones users

Many African consumers bought new iPhones under the promise of improved AI functions advertised in Apple’s marketing campaigns.

With reports of the settlement going viral, some users are wondering if international consumers suffered from similar false advertising.

African Users in the Deal?

At present, there is nothing to show that non-US citizens can automatically qualify.

And this is because:

  • The case has been filed under a US class action
  • Consumer laws differ from country to country
  • Remedies for losses are subject to the US jurisdiction

However, legal experts say that international pressure to regulate or file further lawsuits in other jurisdictions may yet become necessary if global concerns regarding misleading advertisements persist.

The Reaction from Apple Inc.

In its statement, Apple Inc. explained that the suit had to do with “the availability of two additional features” connected to the Apple Intelligence launch.

Moreover, according to Apple, the reason why they agreed to settle the issue is that they wanted to focus on providing products and services for their clients.

It is worth mentioning that Apple refused to acknowledge any liability associated with the case.

Conclusion

Apple Inc.’s deal worth $250 million is becoming one of the biggest AI-related cases against tech companies this year.

Although African customers using iPhones will most likely not qualify, the case raises many more questions about how global companies advertise unfinished AI products.

The more competition there is in artificial intelligence, the more attention it will receive from legal circles.
