Has Mali given its nod to the Junta mandate for the coming five years?

Mali MaliMali – Mali might have finally given up on democratic hopes as it accepts Junta andate which was presented as the final phase of consultations prior to elections by the participants and the members in the “National Conference on Refoundation”.

On Thursday, the authorities suggested a transition from six months to five years. Mali witnessed successive coups in August 2020 and May 2021 but now, post all that was experienced by them, the ruling military pledged that it will hand over the power to civilians after presidential and legislative elections.

The military decided upon it because there was a lot of pressure on economic grounds and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) said that it is high time that their arrogance is kept aside for national interest.

The Junta was led by Colonel Assimi Goïta and he was the one who finally informed ECOWAS that it was unable to stick to the formaley agreed upon schedule.

By the middle of December, the ECOWAS stressed that it now wants to go ahead with all the election practices by February so that a civilian government can take its place.

They somehow threatened the junta with new sanctions making them go into backfoot which essentially paved for the formation of civilian government. “The participants were in favor of extending the transition period in order to carry out the institutional reforms that will allow for credible, fair and transparent elections,” said a document which was acknowledged by  Colonel Goïta.
