In a recent development in Senegal jails three TikTok influencers are now behind bars following social media posts that are alleged to insult President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. This move has further increased the debate on political speech and freedom of expression in West Africa.
The influencers, who are in association with the online content company Feenal Digital, were issued jail terms, which do not have any suspensions. The timing of this incident is particularly delicate given that tensions have escalated between President Faye and his former prime minister, Ousmane Sonko.

Who Are the Three TikTok Influencers?
The longest jail sentence was given to Mandoumbe Diop, popular on TikTok as Lamignou Darou.
Mandoumbe Diop was given a three-month prison sentence without suspension. It is believed that he is the most followed among the three influencers, with over half a million followers on TikTok and many more viewers for his videos.
Another two creators from Feenal Digital, Magueye Diaw, called Oustaz Thiep, and Moustapha Ndiaye, referred to as Ndiaye Touba, were each sentenced to a two-month prison term without suspension.
In addition, both creators were also fined 500,000 CFA francs, approximately $800, according to their attorney.
The three social media influencers had an attorney, Abdy Nar Ndiaye, who claimed that their videos were comical and thus not supposed to be a cause of prosecution.
