The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has donated US$8 million to the World Health Organisation (WHO) in a major cooperation meant to solve the humanitarian crisis in Sudan. Signed at the WHO headquarters in Geneva, this agreement will finance important health projects in Sudan in an effort to improve the terrible situation its people live in.
Under Sultan Al Shamsi, Assistant Minister for International Development Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the agreement was formalized between WHO and UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA). Sultan Al Shamsi signed on UAE behalf. With Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Political Affairs, present at the Geneva signing event, Director-General of WHO, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus signed on behalf of the organization.
This donation helps WHO’s initiatives in delivering basic healthcare services in areas affected by war and adds to UAE’s larger dedication to world humanitarian relief. The money will especially go into programs for disease prevention, emergency response capacity, and infrastructure supporting healthcare.
“The work done by the World Health Organization in Sudan is saving lives daily,” said Lana Zaki Nusseibeh. “We believe it is essential to support this continuous mission.” Long-standing cooperation between the UAE and the WHO has helped people in crises all throughout the region. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus added, “The World Health Organization will keep supporting the pressing health needs of the people of Sudan and the refugees in neighboring countries with help from partners and donors. We appreciate the UAE making this kind donation. We have to cooperate to save the most defenseless people’s lives.
Through UN agencies and humanitarian groups, the UAE’s contribution to the WHO is a part of a larger $70 million pledge meant to meet pressing humanitarian needs in Sudan. A sizable share of the $100 million UAE promised in April at the “International Humanitarian Conference for Sudan and Neighbouring Countries” is this money. With this gift, Sudan receives UAE assistance totaling more than $3.5 billion, bringing past ten-year total aid to level.
