Western Cape Taxi Fares Rise: Full List of New Prices and Affected Routes in Cape Town

Communities in many parts of the Western Cape will have to pay additional money for trips on minibus taxis after some taxi operators increased taxi fares for various routes in several areas.

Fare hikes ranging from R2 to R5 per trip were said to apply to some of the minibus taxi routes in and around Cape Town, whereas some long-distance routes within and from the Western Cape would hike their rates by up to R150.

These hikes in fares were recently announced at a media briefing held in Bellville.

Reasons for Higher Taxi Fare Prices

The taxi trade unions claim that the price of fuel and other transport charges are becoming increasingly burdensome for the transporters.

The international shortage of fuel due to tensions in the Middle East has been one of the reasons behind higher fuel costs worldwide, with the South African transport industry being affected.

As a result, commuters who depend on using several taxis daily would be seriously affected by the hike in prices.

One commuter revealed to the media that they are currently paying R1,000 for their trips to work and would be more worried about the higher costs.

Affected Routes

The hike in costs is expected to affect various local minibus taxi routes within the Western Cape region.

Long-distance routes from the Western Cape to the Eastern Cape are also the ones that would be greatly affected, with commuters having to pay up to R150 extra when travelling through these routes.

These routes are predominantly used by workers, students, and families travelling from Cape Town to Eastern Cape communities.

Commute in Cape Town Becoming Expensive

In certain regions of Cape Town, minibuses are still the dominant mode of public transportation since trains are not dependable.

For individuals working night shifts, those working in domestic employment, shop attendants, and people residing in outer suburban regions, the taxi service is their sole means of getting to their destinations.

It appears that the most recent hike in fares will make life difficult for numerous families in South Africa as food prices, power bills, and other living costs are rising.

One of the primary expenditures for low- and middle-income people who utilize public transport daily is transport costs.

More Fuel Price Hikes Likely

According to taxi organizations, there are no more fare increases anticipated for now, but it seems there will be another price hike in the cost of fuel next month.

But most passengers are worried about more fare increases because of the unpredictability of fuel prices.

Conclusion

The recent rise in Western Cape taxi fares is likely to increase the financial burden on many commuters who rely on these services throughout Cape Town and beyond.

Despite claims that the increases are justified due to rising fuel prices, there are concerns that increased transport costs will add further pressure to South Africans’ already rising living costs.
