East Africa is seeing one of the biggest booms in the development of transport infrastructure, with investments worth billions of dollars being made in the construction of railways, highways, and logistics corridors. Currently, work is underway on the Naivasha–Kisumu–Malaba portion of the railroad, which is expected to cost between $5 and $7 billion. The project will allow direct connection to the Ugandan project of constructing the Malaba–Kampala SGR, which will cost around $2.9 billion.
Once both railways are completed, cargo traveling from the Port of Mombasa to Kampala would require only 24 hours compared to the four or five days required currently.
This railway project would bring about decreased logistics costs, traffic congestion on highways, and improved logistics between Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, and the Eastern DRC.
TAZARA Railway to be Modernized
Another huge project in terms of transforming transport infrastructure in the region is the TAZARA railway.
Currently, the governments of Tanzania and Zambia have agreed on a modernization program that would cost around $1.4 billion.
Built to provide an economic link from the copper mines of Zambia to the port of Dar es Salaam, the TAZARA railway line continues to be one of the most strategic transport corridors in Southern and East Africa.
They are anticipated to increase the capacity for moving freight and improve reliability, in addition to facilitating mineral exports and reducing transport costs for businesses in the region.
Kenya Develops Vital Highway Corridors

Kenya has initiated the development of its Rironi-Mau Summit (A8) Highway, one of the busiest freight highways in the country and an important link in the Northern Corridor.
It involves widening parts of the highway from two-lane to four and six-lane highways, which would help reduce congestion for trucks carrying goods from the Port of Mombasa to other countries.

Development of Isiolo-Mandera Road Corridor
Kenya is developing the Isiolo-Mandera Road Corridor, a project targeting the improvement of connections in northern Kenya.
In addition to building roads, the government is cooperating with the local population to facilitate the development of infrastructure and economy along the corridor.
The completed highway would help access isolated areas, facilitate agricultural trade, and improve cross-border movement with Ethiopia and Somalia.
Projects on Urban and National Road Infrastructure in Tanzania
Tanzania keeps investing in the transport infrastructure through several highway projects.
Some of the significant developments include the creation of a six-lane expressway linking the Central Business District of Dodoma and Chamwino in order to improve the flow of traffic within the country’s administrative capital.
Besides, the government has made considerable funding commitments towards the upgrading of the country’s national road infrastructure that will enhance connectivity among ports, industries, and agricultural regions.
