Spain Deploys Troops After Ceuta Migrant Crossing Crisis

Thousands of migrants have crossed from Morocco into Spain’s Ceuta enclave, causing chaos and resulting in Spain deploying troops into Ceuta as the country grapples with border security, migration policies, and coordination with North African states and other European nations.

Spanish Forces Deployed to Bring Order

Spain’s Ministry of the Interior has announced that the forces will assist the Civil Guard in Ceuta to help maintain public security and conduct border operations.

The officials noted that the move came on the heels of a surge in border crossing activities that overwhelmed local reception centers and security officers.

The ministry also added that Spain is cooperating with the Moroccan government in returning the migrants into Ceuta who crossed its borders illegally as soon as possible.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is expected to travel to Ceuta to address the crisis.

Why Did So Many Migrants Enter Ceuta?

The reason for the sudden influx is still not known.

Local media outlets reported that thousands of migrants swam around the jetty that separates Morocco and the Spanish territory of Ceuta after the security measures started to weaken during the day.

Most of the migrants crossed the sea by using inflatable rings.

Spanish authorities noted that criminal smuggling networks urged migrants to cross the borders irregularly after the recent ruling issued by Spain’s Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court stated earlier this month that migrants who were arrested while trying to cross the sea to enter Ceuta or Melilla cannot be immediately deported back to Morocco.

Increasing Death Toll Brings More Humanitarian Problems

Whereas the majority of immigrants managed to cross into Spanish territory, the journey proved fatal for some other immigrants.

According to reports from the authorities, at least 18 individuals drowned while trying to swim to Ceuta, highlighting the humanitarian risks involved in illegal immigration across the Strait of Gibraltar.

The local reception centers soon became overwhelmed, as the emergency services were unable to assist the migrants in obtaining shelter, food, and medical assistance.

Photos circulated on social media showed hundreds of migrants sleeping in public locations, where security forces tried to regain control over the territory in question.

Crossings Were Also Registered in Melilla

The wave of immigration was not restricted solely to Ceuta.

According to the official statistics, 300-400 immigrants crossed into Melilla, another autonomous Spanish city situated on the Mediterranean coast of Morocco.

Ceuta and Melilla are the only EU land borders with Africa; hence, these two cities play an important role in immigration into Europe.

Migration problems and diplomatic conflicts related to this issue have persisted for a long time in both cities.

Italy Demands Stiffer Policies on Borders

These events prompted political responses in other parts of Europe as well.

Italy’s prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, stated that her administration is considering implementing extraordinary policies, such as reviewing measures concerning the Schengen area, following her assessment of scenes from Ceuta as an illustration of security threats associated with irregular migration.

This view was also shared by Italy’s foreign minister Antonio Tajani, who stated that Europe must beef up its external borders.

Spain, however, dismissed the criticism.

Its foreign minister José Manuel Albares accused Italy’s officials of politicizing migration while calling for more European solidarity.
