Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar Challenge Tinubu in Presidential Race Commencing in 2027

Commencement of the presidential race for Nigeria in 2027 has commenced with President Bola Tinubu being challenged by political figures such as Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar.

The January 16 election is occurring in the context of inflation and economic as well as security challenges facing the most populous country on the continent.

More than 80 percent of Nigerians believe that their nation is on the wrong track, according to SBM Intelligence, while more than 45 percent of people are experiencing economic hardships and insecurity.

Tinubu’s Bid for Re-election

As he defends his presidency, Tinubu, who won the 2023 presidential election, is vying for a second consecutive term but faces 18 opposition candidates.

Nonetheless, the upcoming election is projected to center on a three-way contest comprising former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi.

In 2023, Tinubu won with 36.6%, Atiku won 29%, and Obi won 25%.

The attempt to form a united opposition front against the APC of Tinubu did not go well for the two politicians, who had to run their own campaigns.

Peter Obi and Atiku Take Aim at Tinubu’s Legacy

Both of the opposition figures are expected to center their campaigns on economic difficulties and insecurity.

The campaign of Obi for the 2023 presidential election was supported by many young Nigerians who were unhappy with the established political parties. The reason being that Nigerians need some kind of a break from politics as usual.

While Obi was running his campaign for the first time, Atiku was trying once again to win the presidency, having been unsuccessful before.

The biggest problem for the opposition will probably be to unite people against Tinubu and his record.

Cost of Living Problem Plagues Tinubu’s Presidency in Nigeria

Economic reform has characterized Tinubu’s presidency.

He has abolished Nigeria’s long-standing fuel subsidy and undertaken important reforms regarding the country’s currency that have caused a major depreciation of the naira.

Such steps were taken in an effort to cut back government expenses and stimulate investment, although it was also a factor in the increased cost of living in the country.

Nigerians have seen an increase in the cost of food, transport and housing, which has caused the president to be called “T-Pain”.

Though economic indicators may have improved, the positive changes have not been equally distributed to regular Nigerians.

“The economy is the biggest problem. It’s the one thing that affects people everywhere in the country,” said Afolabi Adekaiyaoja, writer of The Bellwether newsletter.

Security Issues May Determine 2027 Presidential Race Results

Economic problems have been one of the important issues faced by Tinubu.

Armed factions, kidnappings, and jihadist terror continue to affect several regions of Nigeria.

Bandit attacks by groups of armed marauders are reported in the northwest, while in the northeast, there are continued security concerns due to the threat posed by Boko Haram and similar jihadist organizations.

The government has claimed that the security situation is improving as a result of military action, but critics claim that Nigerians are still vulnerable to violence.

The election is thus bound to be a referendum for many voters on whether Tinubu’s reforms have done anything to improve their lives.

A Tough Race Looms for Tinubu

The 2027 elections will be the opportunity to see whether Tinubu has been able to convince voters that his reforms need more time to bear fruit.

Obi and Atiku will have to capitalize on the widespread discontent in the country without running the risk of another fractured opposition candidacy.

With economic troubles, insecurity, and political tensions making up the discourse of Nigeria, its presidential election in January may well be one of the most watched in Africa.
