Africa Railway Construction Projects 2026

Africa is witnessing some of the biggest transportation revolutions on account of huge investments made by governments in railway infrastructure. The largest rail network of Egypt covers an approximate distance of 2,000 kilometers from the Mediterranean coastline to the Red Sea, and extends southwards to Abu Simbel.

This project, worth billions of dollars, will connect several cities, including Marsa Matrouh, Alexandria, Cairo, Ain Sokhna, Luxor, Aswan, and Abu Simbel, to provide one of the most developed rail networks on the continent.

The high-speed railway that can move passengers at a speed of 250 km/h and also be used for cargo transportation will increase transport efficiency and reduce the burden on the country’s road transport system.

Expected effects include improvements in tourism and increased trade connections in Egypt.

Expansion of Connections in Tanzania with SGR

The Tanzania Standard Gauge Railway is among the largest and most influential infrastructure projects in East Africa.

Electrified railway links the Port of Dar es Salaam and several inland cities, including Morogoro, Dodoma, Mwanza, and Kigoma, and its further extension will make the connection with Rwanda and Burundi, allowing landlocked countries access to international shipping routes.

The construction of the railway has already decreased the travel time from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro to two hours. The railway built with the help of Turkish and Chinese companies is expected to be a key element in increasing regional trade in the East African Community.

Lobito Corridor Boosts Mineral Exports from Central Africa

The Lobito Corridor Railways Project has been identified as one of the most strategic railway infrastructure projects in Africa.

The project entails rehabilitation and construction of a railway from the Atlantic port of Lobito in Angola, traversing the DRC and ending in Zambia. The corridor will act as an expressway for copper, cobalt, and other strategic minerals mined in the region.

Considering that the world continues to experience increasing demand for minerals used in electric vehicle batteries, the Lobito Corridor is poised to develop into a vital supply chain linking mining regions in Africa directly to overseas markets.

Apart from facilitating mineral exports, the project is set to boost investments and regional logistics.

Nigeria Builds Up Its Standard Gauge Railway

Nigeria is developing its Standard Gauge Railway system, which includes the key railway corridor of Kano-Kaduna, which is a section of the wider Lagos-Kano Railway.

As well as developing long-distance railway lines, there have been other investments made in urban transit schemes like the Lagos Red Line that help solve the traffic problem and enhance mobility in the biggest Nigerian city.

Another railway that is being built in the region is the Trans-Guinean Railway. The railway project covers a distance of 650 km and is designed to haul iron ore from the Simandou region to the Atlantic coast.

The railway is set to operate starting from 2026 to 2027, and it represents one of the biggest mining projects in West Africa.

The project will greatly increase the ability to export Guinea’s massive deposits of iron ore and will provide new economic opportunities thanks to infrastructure development and job creation.
