M-PESA Ethiopia electricity payment continues to expand its digital payment offerings and has now launched a new prepaid electricity payment feature on its app.
It is now possible to pay for the electricity you use and get prepaid electricity units without going to utility offices or to any authorized payees.
The move by the firm is in line with its strategy to improve digital financial services and help make payments easier for millions of Ethiopians.
What Is a New Prepaid Electricity Payment Feature?
This prepaid electricity payment service enables the customers of M-PESA to purchase units of electricity through their phones.
When payment is successful, an instant 20-digit token will be generated, and it can then be used to access electricity.
The digital process eliminates the necessity of vouchers or personal visits, allowing customers to recharge their power supply at any time through the app.
The service is aimed at making things more convenient for users while being in line with Ethiopia’s strategy of digitization of transactions and financial inclusion.

Boosting Digital Payments in Ethiopia – M-PESA Ethiopia electricity payment
The launch cements the place of M-PESA Ethiopia in Ethiopia’s rapidly expanding digital payment industry.
Since the introduction of the mobile money service to Ethiopia, the platform has continued to grow through the provision of services other than peer-to-peer payment services, including merchant payments and bill payments, among others.
The implementation of the prepaid system for electricity payment has helped M-PESA develop further, becoming an important factor in increasing cashless payments, which is very important for achieving financial inclusion in Ethiopia.
Given the increase in the availability of digital services in the country, cooperation between mobile money service providers and utility companies will become more and more significant.
