Finally, Nigeria’s Digital Switch-Over (DSO) program is to be commissioned officially on June 17, 2026. This marks a crucial phase where there will be a switch from an analogue TV system to a digital one.
Nigeria Digital Switch Over, This was announced by Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, following the inspection of facilities related to this program’s launch across the country. It has been stated that this process would help enhance TV viewing experience, increase the number of available channels, and offer more chances for broadcast media operators and advertisers.
It is being implemented via a partnership among the organizations NIGCOMSAT, National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), and the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation.
What Is Nigeria’s Digital Switch Over (DSO)?
Digital Switch Over (DSO) in Nigeria refers to the transition process that involves replacing the analogue TV signals with digital broadcasting technologies.
Unlike analogue transmission, digital broadcasts offer many advantages, including:
- A better picture quality,
- Increased number of channels available,
- Improved stability of signal transmissions,
- Viewership tracking technology,
- And more regional and satellite coverage.
According to the government, the new broadcasting platform will function in SD (Standard Definition) before being upgraded to HD (High Definition).
Will Your Television Work?
It depends on the type of television set you have.
If your television set is digital
Your Smart Television and digital-compatible TV set will continue working normally as long as it can receive DVB-T2 digital broadcasts.
Rescanning the channels might be necessary upon completion of the DSO process.
In the case of your TV being analogue
Your analogue TV will continue working, but you will probably require a digital set-top box or decoder in order to use it effectively.
Without this device, analogue TVs might eventually become unable to watch any broadcasts once analogue transmissions are completely phased out.
Do Nigerians Have To Pay for the Platform?
As the government explains, it is a free-to-air TV broadcasting.
Idris Mohammed, Minister, says that the rollout of DSO at the moment is different from the previous attempts of introducing the technology in the country since the devices in use now cost less than the encrypted devices used in the past.
Moreover, the government explains that users are supposed to get access to content via mobile apps and satellite across Sub-Saharan Africa using NIGCOMSAT’s services.
Does DSO Mean Replacing DStv?
As the Federal Government explains, there are no intentions of replacing pay-TV channels, such as DStv Nigeria. However, the rollout is aimed at fostering competition within the broadcasting sector.
As the minister noted, the rollout of digital technology would “break the monopoly” of pay TV services as Nigerians would watch numerous channels for free.
What Will Change for Television Stations and Advertisers?
One of the biggest developments under the new DSO regulations is audience measurement systems.
The government explains that television stations and advertisers will be able to know:
- Channels viewers tune into
- Demographics of their audience
- Engagement patterns of the viewers
This information should lead to better ad placement and help the television stations create more focused programs.
Why Is DSO Important for Nigeria?
According to reports, the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) made several attempts at digital migrations over the last decade. However, most of them were stopped due to technical problems, expensive decoders, and small coverage areas.
The current digital migration program, starting on June 17, 2026, is claimed to be the most ambitious one, reaching the entire country along with the help of satellite transmission from the initial few pilot cities.
