Nigeria and the US sign $700 Billion Mining Framework: What Mineral Resources Could Unlock American Investment in Africa’s Biggest Economy?

Nigeria and the United States have signed a framework to enable more investments from the Americans in Nigeria’s mining sector and open up yet another avenue to develop its estimated $700 billion mineral resource base. The framework was signed on September 23, 2026, on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly by the Nigerian Minister of Solid Mineral Development, Dele Alake, and the US Deputy Secretary of State, Christopher Landau.

The $700 billion is Nigeria’s estimated mineral resources. It does not mean that the United States will be making an investment of $700 billion in Nigeria’s mining sector. The framework seeks to unlock potential projects and investments through the mining value chain.

What Does the Nigeria-US Mining Framework Deal With?

The deal concerns geological information, minerals exploration, minerals development and processing, infrastructure, and technical capacity building. The Nigerian government says the framework will leverage the bilateral cooperation to establish commercial ties and ensure the projects’ movement from exploration to development.

In Abuja’s view, the deal is also about diversifying the economy, which largely relies on oil. The country needs more foreign investment, as well as the development of local expertise in mining and processing.

The next step would be to identify profitable projects and attract private sector investments instead of focusing solely on the signing of the framework.

Which Minerals Could Draw US Investments?

There are reserves of lithium, gold, tin, gemstones, iron ore, and phosphate in Nigeria, meaning that investors will get access to both industrial and critical minerals markets.

Lithium

Lithium is one of the most strategically important materials mentioned in the deal due to its application in batteries used by electric vehicles and energy storage systems. The Nigerian lithium market is relatively young, and the major foreign players in it are Chinese companies.

Gold and Gemstones

Gold and gemstones are examples of areas in which there have been established mining activities in Nigeria and could potentially benefit from investments in terms of exploration and mining.

Tin and Iron Ore

Tin is used in a wide variety of industries, ranging from electronics to manufacturing, whereas iron ore is used in steel production. Mining and developing such mineral reserves will help develop the industry if there are further investments.

Phosphate

Phosphate is an essential element of fertiliser production, which makes it relevant to both agriculture and industry.

Why Local Processing Is Such a Big Part of the Deal?

Nigeria would like to get rid of being only an exporter of raw mineral ore.

According to Alake, the country requires more local processing, better employment and better skills for its people, as well as more opportunities for Nigerian companies.

It means that future developments may include not only mining but also processing facilities and training of people.

So, What’s Next?

The deal shifts from diplomacy to implementation. It will be up to Nigeria and its US partners to find commercially feasible projects, attract businesses, and create investment partnerships.

From the perspective of the US government, this plan is part of an ongoing attempt at building diversified supply chains for the minerals that are used in advanced technologies, such as electric cars and renewable energy systems. From Nigeria’s point of view, the goal will be to transform the huge mineral resource potential of the country into economic value.

This means that the real question is not about how many minerals worth $700 billion Nigeria has, but rather about how much of them is commercially exploitable and what economic value can be kept within the country.
