The South African team may just be handed one of the best gifts going into the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, after reports emerged that fast-bowling legend Shabnim Ismail will consider reversing her decision to retire from international cricket.
Shabnim Ismail return, It is claimed that Ismail had positive talks with Cricket South Africa Director of Cricket Enoch Nkwe and Head Coach Mandla Mashimbyi about playing in next month’s tournament.
Why Does South Africa Need Ismail So Badly?
In the post-Ismail era, since she retired from international cricket in 2023, the Proteas have found it hard to replace Ismail’s quick-fire pace and experience.
The Women’s Proteas continued to perform well in ICC competitions, qualifying for the Women’s T20 World Cup final in 2024 before qualifying for the ODI World Cup final in India. However, even as they had deep runs in the ICC events, the team lacked true pace bowlers.
According to Mashimbyi, the team requires more options when it comes to pace bowling after they tour New Zealand.
“We definitely need players like Shabnim who will add depth to our bowling attack.”
Still Fastest Woman in Women’s Cricket
Ismail has maintained her position as the fastest woman in women’s cricket even after she retired from international cricket.
Ismail continues to dazzle spectators in franchise cricket with impressive performances in the Women’s Premier League, The Hundred, and the Women’s Big Bash League.
At 37 years old, she is still the holder of the fastest ball in women’s cricket.
A Big Push Before the T20 World Cup
Ismail’s return will allow South Africa’s formidable pace duo to once again be paired with Marizanne Kapp.
Kapp will likely join the squad after illness cut short parts of her recent season, along with former Proteas captain Dane van Niekerk, after she recently announced that she was coming out of retirement.
South Africa will kick off their Women’s T20 World Cup challenge against the Australian women’s national cricket team in Manchester on June 13, and Ismail’s possible return will significantly boost their chances of claiming the title.
Why This Is Important for the Proteas
The Proteas women’s team has always been very close to winning a global title, but never quite managed to clinch the trophy.
Ismail’s return will give South Africa:
- World-class pace bowling
- Match-winning ability
- Leadership under pressure
- A better power play attack
- Balance against top opponents like Australia and India
For a team fighting to win their first-ever ICC title, adding the world’s fastest bowler to their squad might prove decisive.
