The United States has increased pressure on Sudan amid claims about the use of chemical weapons by Sudan’s army against the RSF, making the case an international diplomatic controversy and sanction dispute.
The U.S. Government discovered that the government of Sudan used chemical weapons in 2024. It is a violation of international law and the Chemical Weapons Convention. The Sudanese government, on the other hand, denies these allegations, claiming that they were politically motivated and illegitimate.
What Does the U.S. Accuse of?
This finding by the U.S. Government relates to the use of chemical weapons by the government of Sudan in 2024 during the fight between the SAF and the RSF.
The U.S. determination has prompted sanctions imposed according to the Chemical and Biological Weapons Control and Warfare Elimination Act of 1991, which include restrictions on exports from/to the U.S. and the U.S. government credit.
The United States has insisted that there are sufficient grounds for punishment in spite of uncertainty about the presence of publicly available evidence.
Sudan Rejects the Chemical Weapons Allegations
The Sudanese government has denied the allegations and stated that Washington failed to provide enough evidence to support its claims.
Moreover, in July, Sudan stated that it offered to provide assistance in conducting a field investigation by U.S. experts to verify the allegations. Sudan claimed that Washington refused the offer and imposed sanctions bypassing proper verification procedures.
The Sudanese authorities confirmed their adherence to the Chemical Weapons Convention and denied using prohibited chemical agents by the SAF.
What Has the U.S. Done?
However, this pressure has shifted from the sanctions that were initially declared in 2025.
These steps were taken in July 2026 by the United States as part of the sanctions policy against countries that are involved in using chemical and biological weapons, in response to the fact that Sudan failed to meet the requirements and thereby avoid the new sanctions.
This step has elevated the chemical-weapons claim to an even more prominent position in the broader U.S. Sudan strategy.
What about the OPCW and international investigation?
The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) must be at the heart of any independent evaluation since it is responsible for the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention.
The U.S. has made its determination based on the OPCW framework, as it claimed that chemical weapons were used in Sudan, violating the Convention. However, an independently made public determination by the OPCW, establishing the responsible party behind the alleged use, remains an important difference from the U.S. determination.
