With about 25 million people suffering from extreme food shortage in Sudan, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has voiced its most serious worries over the escalating humanitarian situation there. Particularly the UAE has underlined the terrible situation in North Darfur, where famine has been declared in areas including the Zamzam camp, which houses over half a million displaced people.
Along with terrible hunger in nine more states, the possibility of starvation in the Abu Shouk and Al Salam camps has driven the UAE to applaud the most recent UN Security Council (UNSC) meeting targeted on Sudan. The UAE exhorts the world to keep focused on this urgent matter.
Emphasizing the importance of an emergency reaction to the humanitarian catastrophe in Sudan, the UAE supports a ceasefire and quick delivery of humanitarian aid. Though thousands of people are starving in places like Zamzam Camp and Northern Darfur, vehicles loaded with life-saving supplies remain stopped at the Sudanese border due of urgency.
Declining the use of starving as a weapon of war, the UAE demands the immediate release of Sudanese Armed Forces’ enforced limitations on humanitarian access. Apart from that, the UAE expects the Rapid Support Forces to guarantee the secure running of workers and humanitarian organizations free from attack risk.
The UAE underlines that the growing crisis calls for a quick scale-up of cross-border and cross-line humanitarian access to save millions of lives. The world community cannot let Sudanese people to be political bargaining chips.
Calling on the UNSC to use all possible measures to handle the dire situation in Sudan, the UAE advises allowing UN humanitarian organizations to provide relief all throughout the nation via cross-line and cross-border paths if needed. Such forceful action by the Council can be very important in organizing worldwide initiatives to deliver the required relief and stop the hunger across adjacent countries.
Resiterating its demand for an instantaneous and durable ceasefire, the UAE exhorts the warring parties to give human life top priority over military goals and let the safe, quick, and continuous movement of humanitarian aid across Sudan. The UAE further stresses the need of honest participation in peace negotiations aiming at a civilian-led transition.
