Mali Conflict Escalates: Tuareg Fighters Shoot Down Russian Helicopter

The conflict in northern Mali has reached yet another level following claims made by the Tuareg rebels, who shot down a Russian military helicopter during the fighting with the government troops. Mali conflict escalates, This latest turn of events reveals the harshness of the struggle in northern Mali. Although FLA provided evidence in the form of video footage that it had destroyed a Russian helicopter, there is still no confirmation from either Mali or Russia regarding the loss of the helicopter.

Tuareg Rebels Claim They Took Down a Helicopter

According to the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), a coalition of Tuareg rebel groups, its fighters ambushed a military convoy moving from Gao to Anefis on July 4-5. During the ambush, the convoy escorted by a Russian Mi-24 “Hind” attack helicopter was attacked, and this helicopter was shot down.

According to the FLA, it managed to destroy several military vehicles in the process, calling the attack the most significant assault on the Malian and Russian-backed forces. The rebels also released video clips that apparently showed the destruction of the aircraft; yet, it is unclear whether the footage has been verified independently.

Reports about Casualties Have Not Been Confirmed

As independent journalists who follow the conflict report, the crew of the helicopter might be dead after the crash. However, neither Mali’s armed forces nor the Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed the losses.

Due to the lack of confirmation by the official sources, it was difficult to verify the scale of the losses, as most of the information available came from the rebels and local reports.

Fighting Goes On in the North of Mali

The reported incident with the helicopter took place during a large-scale offensive of the Tuareg armed forces in northern Mali. The armed groups have attacked several strategic locations, such as Anefis.

The most recent bout of violence comes in the wake of several months of rising confrontation between the soldiers of the Malian government, the Russian Africa Corps members, Tuareg separatist militants, and jihadist organizations active within the area.

Importance of Anefis

The town of Anefis holds a strategically critical location in Northern Mali, connecting several military routes in the Kidal region. Control over the town has been repeatedly switched between the government troops and Tuareg insurgents during previous conflicts.

An interruption in the route will have an impact on military logistics.

What Happens Next?

While the FLA claims its helicopter strike as a crucial victory on the battlefield, there is little evidence to independently verify the event. The military experts predict continued activities of Malian troops in the area while the situation is being assessed.

The attack once again demonstrates the increasing involvement of the Russian military in supporting Mali’s armed forces, a cooperation that attracts more attention due to ongoing security issues in the Sahel.

In light of the ongoing clashes in Northern Mali, another confrontation between the government troops and militant groups is highly probable.
